Sports

Our students enjoy playing sports and mixing with their friends on the flat open grounds which make up the vast proportion of this school. The students enjoy sitting under the magnificent old trees of our school, or contemplating the serenity of the native bush, planted many years ago by the local community.

There is always keen competition for the Year 3-8s between the local schools at Lower Waipa Swimming, Athletics, and Winter Sports (soccer/rugby/netball). Our top Year 7 and 8 athletes go on to compete at the Waikato Full Primary Association events, swimming, cross country and athletics.

Basketball

Basketball is played from May to October at the Te Awamutu event centre for year 5 to year 8 students. A full uniform is provided by the club. Practise depends on the team but is generally held on a Sunday afternoon at the Te Awamutu event centre. Keep an eye out for notices in the school newsletter.

Netball

Netball runs from mid-March to mid-August and is played on Saturdays at the Te Awamutu Netball courts for children aged 7 (or turning 7 this year) and above.

Parents are required to coach, manage and umpire teams. Practise is often held after school but will depend on the coaches’ availability.

Each team is graded according to ability by playing grading games as set by the Te Awamutu netball club. A full uniform is provided by our OSSC club.

Future Ferns are generally children in their first year of netball age 7/8. The season starts mid-May and runs until mid-August.

It involves Year 5/6 and Year 7/8 students with teams being mixed boys and girls who then compete against surrounding Te Awamutu schools. This lasts for about 6 weeks of Term 4, finishing at the end of the year. Watch out for information in the school newsletter in Term 3.

Lower Waipa Winter Championships Competition

Every year students are invited to participate in the Winter Championships where they have the opportunity to play sports against the 9 other schools in our area.  This is a Championship Day and students who play regularly in a Saturday team will be given priority when players are chosen for the Winter Championships.
